We are pleased to receive the comments from Amitrano and colleagues1 on our leading article.2 Indeed, they present interesting data confirming the improvement in outcome following variceal haemorrhage (VH) over recent decades, and demonstrating an effect of liver failure on prognosis—patients with previously compensated cirrhosis having a markedly improved outcome following VH than patients with decompensated cirrhosis (with ascites, jaundice or encephalopathy).
