However, tracheobronchial colonization remains an undeniable factor in the occurrence of secondary respiratory infection [22,34,36-38,40,41,52,78], as the presence of pathogens responsible for VAP have previously colonized the tracheobronchial tree in more than 90% of patients in some series [42,60]. Finally, the involvement of bacteria from the upper airways and digestive tract is not systematic like the occurrence of pneumonia without such previous colonization is still possible [26,38,59].
