Summary

A patient developed abnormalities in liver function tests 18 months after renal transplantation. Progressive hepatic failure, characterized by hyperbilirubinemia, portal-systemic encephalopathy, and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, preceded death. Nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver (NRHL) was diagnosed from a surgical liver biopsy and at postmortem. NRHL is a liver disease which may be a consequence of renal transplantation.
