Effect of bile acid supplementation on endogenous lipid synthesis in patients with short bowel syndrome: A pilot study
2020, Clinical NutritionCitation Excerpt :Indeed, few interventional studies have demonstrated an effect of UDCA in children or adult patients with long-term parenteral nutrition for chronic intestinal failure [9,32,33,35]. If confirmed in a larger number of patients, UDCA could be a useful preventive treatment in patients suffering from severe intestinal malabsorption who have lipid metabolism disorders (hypertriglyceridemia), since these anomalies often lead to chronic cholestasis and terminal liver failure despite normal-caloric PN [36]. In conclusion, the results of this pilot study show that daily oral intake of UDCA at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day reduces cholesterol and triglyceride synthesis in patients with SBS receiving PN.
Something old, something new: liver injury associated with total parenteral nutrition therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors
2020, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :In contrast, Dahms and Halpin described the biopsy findings in 11 infants on TPN and found no association between the severity of liver injury and the duration of TPN [36]. In adults, steatosis and steatohepatitis are more commonly seen (Fig. 4) [37-40]. Bowyer et al studied 60 adults of which 9 had liver biopsies.

2012, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :However, the severity of these changes and the associations between different histologic findings have not been clearly established. Most studies involving adult patients have relied on laboratory data with relatively little description of histology [15-19]. The largest study of adult patients on TPN published by Grant et al [20] included 100 patients, but histology was reported in only 9 of those.
