2021, Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and ClinicalCitation Excerpt :Nerve fibres in the muscularis externa and nerve cell bodies in enteric ganglia were labelled by VIP antisera along the entire digestive tract and in all species investigated (Furness and Costa, 1987; Brookes, 2001). The discovery that some enteric neurons contained nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and probably used NO as a neurotransmitter (Bredt et al., 1990; Costa et al., 1992; Llewellyn-Smith et al., 1992) provided an additional marker for IMNs. The histochemical reaction for NADPH diaphorase was shown to mark NOS neurons (Young et al., 1992; Ward et al., 1992).
