2008, GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :Several studies have shown an excellent correlation between the muscle CSA and muscle thickness during longitudinal muscle activity, especially during the part of esophageal contraction when there are no changes in the esophageal lumen. The latter is the case during the entire period of contraction or the manometrically recorded pressure wave.13,14 A recent study from our laboratory showed the validity of muscle thickness measurement as an adequate surrogate marker of the longitudinal muscle contraction.15
