A Diagnostic Approach to Recurrent Orofacial Swelling: A Retrospective Study of 104 Patients
2017, Mayo Clinic ProceedingsOrofacial granulomatosis
2016, Clinics in DermatologyCitation Excerpt :Additional studies describe improvement of signs and symptoms in patients practicing elimination diets, adding to the evidence that diet may be contributory.40,47,56,57 Microbiologic agents have been associated with chronic granulomatous diseases, including tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, and CD, thus their suspected role in OFG.58,59 Studies have primarily focused on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium paratuberculosis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Borrelia burgdorferi.

2013, Respiratory InvestigationCitation Excerpt :Cell invasiveness was found in 79 (71%) of 112 serotype I isolates and in none of the 50 serotype II isolates. Some investigators used PCR assays to detect mycobacterial DNA in samples of affected tissue from patients with sarcoidosis [20–22], but others did not [23–25]. Quantification of bacterial genomes detected in sarcoid lesions is essential for clarifying the etiologic correlation between lesions and bacteria detected therein, because a very small amount of bacteria or bacterial DNA can be detected, even in conditions of latent infection or contamination with no etiologic correlation.

2013, American Journal of the Medical SciencesCitation Excerpt :The cause of sarcoidosis is unknown, but it has been hypothesized to represent a chronic inflammatory reaction to bacteria.8–10 Several infectious agents have been proposed, including Mycobacterium, Propionibacterium, and herpes viruses.10,11 P. acnes is the only microorganism frequently isolated from sarcoid specimens by bacterial culture in Japan.12,13
