Second, catalyzing urea at neutral pH by urease in H. pylori would lead to cytoplasmic overalkalization and ammonia toxicity that inhibit H. pylori proliferation (Clyne et al., 1995; Meyer-Rosberg, Scott, Rex, Melchers, & Sachs, 1996; Mobley et al., 1995; Morgan, Freedman, Depew, & Kraft, 1987), so it makes sense for H. pylori cultured at near-neutral pH to lose urease activity completely (Andersen et al., 1997). Much progress has been made in the search for the regulatory mechanism of urease in H. pylori in the last 20 years, which I aim to summarize in this review in the hope of highlighting what is missing and pointing out future directions.
