      Chronic HCV infection can take from 10 to 30 years to reveal symptoms [72]. Of those chronically infected individuals, 20% will develop cirrhosis, which is liver malfunction due to long-term fibrosis (scarring) [79,80]. Of the individuals that develop cirrhosis, 1% to 3% will develop hepatocellular carcinoma, liver cancer [81].
