Oral contraceptives and stroke: Foes or friends
2022, Frontiers in NeuroendocrinologyCitation Excerpt :Indications of OC-induced risk of VTE were derived almost exclusively from observational studies and pointed to a 2- to 6-fold increased relative risk of VTE (Gomes & Deitcher 2004). Third-generation OC-containing progestins (desogestrel or gestodene) seem to be associated with greater VTE risk than those that contain levonorgestrel (World Health Organization, 1995a, World Health Organization, 1995b, Spitzer et al. 1996, Bloemenkamp et al. 1995, Jick et al. 1995, Previtali et al. 2011, Bonnar & Sabra 1986). Furthermore, OC use is associated with exponentially higher VTE relative risks when used by women who carry an inherited hypercoagulable state (Gomes & Deitcher 2004).
