High concentrations of IL-1β in the gastric mucosa have been shown to inhibit the physiological functions of gastrin-stimulated enterochromaffin-like cells, and decrease histamine secretion [43]. Reduced levels of histamine inhibit the secretion of gastric acid by parietal cells, IL-1β directly inhibits the secretion of acid by parietal cells [44] (Fig. 7).
