2018, Early Human DevelopmentCitation Excerpt :As we observed, in two macrosomic infants from nondiabetic mothers, islet density, β-cell density and α-cell density were not significantly different from infants of diabetic mothers. In these two infants, along with macrosomia, there were other pathological changes such as abundant subcutaneous fat, immaturity of the villous tree of the placenta, cardio- and hepatomegaly, all of which are considered to be characteristic of infants of diabetic mothers [35]. Therefore, macrosomia in these two infants was possibly due to undetected maternal hyperglycemia, but other factors cannot be excluded.
