 Minimum criteria for the diagnosis of diffuse oesophageal spasm based on a 24 hour manometry study

(1) Duration of “spasm” contraction greater than 15 seconds
(2) Maximum amplitude of “spasm” contractions greater than 200 mm Hg
(3) “Spasm” contractions should involve greater than 10 cm of oesophageal body
(4) Symptoms (which should occur with some of the contractions) of chest pain and/or dysphagia should occur during or within 30 seconds of the contraction ending
