Comparison with reference individuals from the general population*75 279 vs 15 325
Comparison with reference individuals from the general population.† Restriction to individuals with data on socioeconomic index‡36 412 vs 8 751
Adults: Outcome measure is sepsis in department of internal medicine†§13 849 vs 2 927
  • *First year of follow-up included.

  • †When comparing with reference individuals from the general population we excluded the first year of follow-up to minimise the risk of ascertainment bias due to hospital admission. Individuals with sepsis in the first year after study entry (n = 78) and those with less than 1 year of follow-up were excluded (n = 997).

  • ‡The socioeconomic index (SEI) is based on a three-category occupational classification.22 Some 6500 children without data on the SEI were assigned a socioeconomic code based on the occupation of their mother.

  • §In this analysis we used the sepsis definition of Gedeborg et al23 (wider criteria with an ICD-9 or ICD-10 diagnosis in a department of internal medicine) and restricted our participants to adults entering the study from 1986 and onwards (see also appendix 2).
