Liver biopsy features were graded and staged according to the scoring system proposed by Kleiner et al.31 The grade of steatosis (0–3), lobular inflammation (0–3), and ballooning (0–2) were then combined to determine the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) activity score (0–8) as proposed.31
