  • Transmural electrical resistance (Rt), subdivided into epithelial (Re) and subepithelial resistance (Rsub) as determined by one-path impedance spectroscopy.

  • Mannitol permeability (PMan) was determined from unidirectional fluxes in mucosal-to-serosal (m-s) direction in the Ussing chamber.

  • From the m-s surface ratios a correction factor was derived for the mucosal surface of coeliac disease biopsies and applied to the previous barrier determinants. Apoptosis of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) is given as the percentage of epithelial cells.
