  • Gene expression of tight junction proteins (CLDN1–4, OCLN and ZO-1–3), the adherens junction proteins (β-catenin and E-cadherin) and the desmosomal proteins (DSC2 and DSG2) was evaluated using real-time reverse transcriptase PCR. Results were normalised to the housekeeping gene, human 18S ribosomal RNA, and fold change was calculated with respect to the mean value in the healthy control group. Data are mean±SEM or median (IQR); n=15 for healthy volunteers and n=14 for patients with FD. p<0.05 is shown in bold.
