Development and function of dendritic cell subsets
2014, ImmunityTranscriptional Control of Dendritic Cell Development
2013, Advances in ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :Newly differentiated cDCs exist in an immature state where they exhibit high endocytic activity but low surface MHC class I and II proteins, but on encountering microbial or inflammatory stimuli, transport peptide–MHC complexes to their cell surface, and induce costimulatory molecules and chemokine receptors directing their migration to lymphoid tissues (Inaba et al., 2000; Mellman & Steinman, 2001; Pierre et al., 1997). Originally considered homogeneous, studies from Steinman (Crowley, Inaba, Witmer-Pack, & Steinman, 1989) and Shortman (Ardavin & Shortman, 1992; Vremec et al., 1992) identified subsets of cDCs based on differential CD8-α expression. Later, a CD4+ cDC subset was identified in lymphoid organs (Shortman & Liu, 2002; Vremec, Pooley, Hochrein, Wu, & Shortman, 2000).
