Disorders of the Gastrointestinal System
2018, Equine Internal Medicine: Fourth EditionIntravenous Shiga toxin 2 promotes enteritis and renal injury characterized by polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration and thrombosis in Dutch Belted rabbits
2008, Microbes and InfectionCitation Excerpt :However, our model is the first to exhibit a simultaneous role of heterophils in Stx2-induced enteric disease and development of renal glomerular lesions. Previous studies indicated that inhibition of PMNs using an anti-CD18 monoclonal antibody in a NZW rabbit model of E. coli O157:H7-induced enteritis attenuated the clinical signs and enteric pathology [20]. In a mouse model of neutrophil depletion, Stx2-induced mortality and renal injury were significantly reduced; however, the renal lesions associated with Stx2 in control mice (not neutrophil-depleted) were not characterized by infiltration of PMNs [21].
