2020, Human PathologyCitation Excerpt :Histologic features of chronic mucosal injury such as architectural distortion and Paneth cell metaplasia were not present on any of the initial biopsies. In adults, lifestyle modifications (dietary modifications and medication discontinuation) can be used to treat mild disease, whereas prescription medications including corticosteroids, thiopurine immunomodulators (azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine), and anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents (infliximab, adalimumab), or diversion of the fecal stream has been used in refractory cases [32–34]. Budesonide, a corticosteroid, has been widely studied and has overall favorable results in inducing and maintaining clinical remission for both CC and LC [35–37].
