2017, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :Although S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12 are predominantly produced by neutrophils and monocytes, they may also be expressed by other cell types including epithelial cells and keratinocytes, particularly during inflammation [30]. S100A8 and S100A9 gene expression has been observed in epithelial cell upon treatment with bacterial antigens or in bacterially infected tissues in Crohn's disease [31–33]. In the present study, SP infection induced the expression of S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12 expression in ME epithelial cells in vitro and high levels of S100A8 and S100A8 gene transcriptions and the proteins were observed in the middle ear mucosa of RecOM and COME patients relative to CI control subjects.
