Some studies have provided evidence that the mucus released by goblet cells can function as a defensive barrier (Deplancke and Gaskins, 2001). In short, these immunocompetent cells are very important to the normal physiological functions of the intestine (Kagnoff, 1996; MacDonald and Monteleone, 2005). Secretory IgA is a major component of the intestinal mucosal barrier and also plays an integral role in intestinal protection (Mestecky and McGhee, 1987).
