Nitrate and nitrite concentrations in rabbit saliva. Comparison with rat saliva
2007, Environmental Toxicology and PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Pilocarpine administration, which allows to collect adequate supplies of saliva without surgery, is however a widely used method for salivary measurements in laboratory animals (Dehpour et al., 1995; Abdollahi et al., 2001). But salivary nitrite production in rabbits of our assay increases only slightly in a statistically insignificant way, when in humans, there is a clear correlation between nitrate and nitrite salivary concentrations (Spiegelhalder et al., 1976; Eisenbrand et al., 1980; Hart and Walters, 1983). It is now recognized that oral microflora is responsible of nitrate reduction in saliva.
