Chronic low-grade inflammation or discrete inflammation of the gut mucosa combined with psychosocial stress may trigger sensitization of the lower gastrointestinal tract in human beings [35] and in rodents [16]. Low-grade inflammation [10,72] and an increase in intraepithelial lymphocytes, CD3-positive cells, and CD25-positive cells have been found in the colonic mucosa of IBS patients [10].
