Endoscopic Treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
2015, Surgical Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :The theory of implantation and injection devices is to instill a bulking agent to augment the natural mechanical barrier to reflux. In 1984, O’Conner and colleagues,9,10 reported an experimental model to control reflux using a bulk-forming agent of either bovine dermal collagen or Teflon (DuPont, Wilmington, Delaware) (PTFE resin) in the distal esophagus of dogs with surgically induced GERD. This required multiple, sometimes large-volume injections with fleeting results.
Endoscopic therapy for gastroesophageal reflux disease
2005, Surgical Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Implantation of a biopolymer into the LES in an effort to increase the antireflux barrier of the muscle has been around since the 1980s. An initial animal model using Teflon paste and bovine collagen injected into the distal esophagus of dogs that were surgically altered to have GERD (via LES myotomy and sphincterotomy) showed promise, with seven of the nine dogs showing improvement in some reflux parameters after the procedure [28]. An initial pilot trial was performed in 10 humans who had medically intractable symptoms [29].
