    It should noted that although the techniques may be relatively easy in the patient who is cooperative, they become difficult nursing issues in the obtunded or intubated patient in the intensive care unit. One case report exists on the use of a hyperbaric oxygen chamber for the purpose of colonic decompression (85). After 7 days of treatment the investigators reported a marked reduction of colonic gas and improvements in systemic markers of inflammation.

    This is supplemented with both serial laboratory testing and serial abdominal examinations. There have been reports of the utilization of hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment of toxic megacolon with claims of improvement in the clinical condition [11]. High-dose intravenous steroids (hydrocortisone 100 mg every 6 hours, methylprednisolone 16 to 20 mg every 8 hours, or prednisolone 20 mg every 8 hours) are the mainstay of specific medical treatment.
