Consequences of copper and lead stress on biochemical properties and mitotic chromosomal behavior of two thelypteroid ferns and their potential in tolerance of those metals
2022, South African Journal of BotanyCitation Excerpt :Moreover, increased SOD activity was also observed in Adiantum Capillus-Veneris and Microsorium punctatum by Cr (Sinam et al., 2012). According to Smaka-Kinel et al. (1996), M.I was considered as an acceptable measure of cytotoxicity for all living organisms and the mitotic activity may be reduced due to the blockage of G1 stage, while suppressing the DNA synthesis (Mohandas and Grant, 1972). In our study it was clearly demonstrated that Cu and Pb exerted an inhibitory effect on cell mitosis so as on M.I of leaf tip cells in both T. interrupta and T. dentata.
Differential sensitivity of Allium cepa L. and Vicia faba L. to aqueous extracts of Cascabela thevetia (L.) Lippold
2021, South African Journal of BotanyCitation Excerpt :Reduction in MI below 50% in Allium (29.41% with fruit extract treatment and 46.77% with leaf extract treatment) indicates sublethal influence of the plant extract (Panda and Sahu 1985; Rank and Nielsen 1997) and is more sensitive than the reduction in MI of Vicia (31.38% with fruit extract treatment and 66.36% with leaf extract treatment). Reduction in MI could possibly be due to inhibition/delay/arrest of cell division, slow progression of cells to mitotic phase, inhibition of DNA synthesis or metaphase arrest due to disruption of spindle function (Kundu and Ray 2017), and is a reliable indicator of genotoxicity (Smaka-Kincl et al. 1996). Both occurrence and frequency of CA and MN in meristematic cells and MN in F1 cells of Allium and Vicia, especially MN of Vicia and CA of Allium are efficient indicators of genotoxic effects (Leme and Marin-Morales 2009).
