Although the first caspase described (caspase-1; initially ICE for interleukin (IL)-1β -converting enzyme) was originally identified via its activity of processing pro-IL-1β into mature IL-1β [25,26], it quickly became clear that proteases of the caspase family are central regulators of apoptosis [27,28]. First described in 1972, apoptosis is characterized morphologically by cell shrinkage, membrane blebbing, nuclear condensation and fragmentation, and disintegration of the cell into membrane-coated apoptotic bodies which can then be phagocytosed by neighboring cells or by professional phagocytes [29].
