2010, Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :All of these factors contribute to high rates of infections seen in this patient population; however, probably the most specific loss seen is within the reticuloendothelial system (RES). The RES is the primary defense system against pathogens in the blood and approximately 90% of these immune cells are located in the liver.3 In cirrhosis, the RES activity is altered by two mechanisms: impairment of phagocytic activity of Kupffer cells (liver resident macrophages) and portosystemic shunting, leading to pathogens escaping exposure to the RES.
