Cellular Migration of Intestinal Epithelia in Suckling and Weaned Rats

Abstract

CELLULAR proliferation in the small intestine and the rapid renewal of intestinal epithelium have been investigated before1–3. A number of techniques have been used to measure the rate of proliferation and the migration of the cells of intestinal epithelium, but only adult animals have been investigated. The morphology4,5 and enzyme6–9 pattern of the small intestine in the suckling differ from that of the adult rat, and therefore we decided to compare the rate of cellular migration at these different ages by means of incorporation of tritiated thymidine and histo-autoradiography.
