This minimally invasive operation, known as endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), can serve as an alternative to surgical resection in the early stage of the cancer (Ponchon, 2001; Kudo et al., 2001; Rembacken et al., 2001). While the colonoscopy procedure is critically important, standard white-light colonoscopy has a major limitation: it can only detect tumor tissues that are larger than ca. 1 cm in size.
