2015, Ultrasound in Medicine and BiologyCitation Excerpt :Recent reports suggest that the use of contrast agent is more suitable for evaluation of the microvasculature because of its increased sensitivity in detecting signals produced by contrast media (Heyne et al. 2002; Neye et al. 2004). This has led to a significant advance in precise evaluation of intestinal wall vasculature and has been found to be a sensitive tool for estimating inflammatory activity in CD reflected by parietal hypervascularization status (Cittadini et al. 2001; Pallotta et al. 2012; Parente et al. 2002; Toth 1976). What's more, conventional bowel US detects mainly bowel wall thickening, whereas the recently available oral isotonic, non-absorbable solutions are able to enlarge the collapsed bowel, which is more favorable in the detection of focal wall thickness because it enables better visualization of the narrowed tract (Di Sabatino et al. 2002).
