Symptoms and diagnosis of gallbladder stones
2006, Best Practice and Research: Clinical GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :Impaired gallbladder motility can be associated with a number of conditions (Table 2). Also, the presence of cholesterol-enriched gallstones is associated with defective fasting and postprandial gallbladder motility in a subgroup of gallstone patients;47,50 this motility defect of the gallbladder is partly due to both sustained excess of biliary cholesterol (“hypercholesterobilia”)52 and faster nucleation/precipitation of solid cholesterol crystals from a supersaturated bile,53,54 both contributing factors to defective gallbladder smooth muscle contractile function.47,55,56 A poor integration between gallbladder motor function and intestinal migrating motor complexes might also worsen gallbladder stasis during fasting.57,58
