PIP: 21 health care professionals from four regions of Ethiopia attended a 6-day workshop to create sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention materials culturally and linguistically appropriate for each of the regions. Two researchers presented and discussed their preliminary findings from the targeted intervention research (TIR) conducted in the four regions represented at the workshop. They spoke about people's perceptions of inadequate diagnostic facilities and rude health workers at government facilities, how women wanted privacy in examination rooms, and that people often fail to return for follow-up. The researchers also presented findings upon self-medication, stigma, and notions of disease causality. Based upon the information they heard, the participants listed 33 topics which need to be addressed in the STD prevention materials.
